FILM SIGNPOSTS AT THE SOKOŁOWSKO HOMMAGE À KIEŚLOWSKI 2016 FESTIVAL. GIVING PLACES CONTEXT.

The 6th edition of the Sokołowsko Hommage à Kieślowski Film Festival coincides with celebration of the Year of Kieślowski, established by the Polish Film Academy on the 20th anniversary of the death of the director. Hommage à Kieślowski is part of these celebrations, but first and foremost stays loyal to the established Festival traditions. Screenings, debates, meetings and workshops will be diversified by including an even larger area of the town in the events. The animation of these places and the usage of a multitude of visual and aural effects, makes the Festival a multifaceted, aesthetically interesting and intellectually challenging event.

An original spatial town-map will guide guests through Sokołowsko – special film signposts will lead visitors between the festival sites. The European Foundation for Audiovisual Education DISCE will organize the event, that in an innovative way visualizes Krzysztof Kieślowski’s work and his ties to Sokołowsko. Signs with the titles of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s films will appear is chosen locations around the town, each of them corresponding in a creative way to the place in question. Not to reveal too much: a “Blind Chance” signpost will great visitors at the entrance to the town, and the old Dr. Brehmer Sanatorium will be marked with a “No End” signpost.

On Friday, the first day of the Festival, secondary school students, along with the DISCE Foundation president Ajka Tarasow, will place the signs in places marked on the festival map of Sokołowsko. A short competition of knowledge about each film will accompany the installation. The course of this unique project will have full photographic and film documentation, it the form of a report-style film.

The town of Sokołowsko itself is crucial for this years edition of the festival. The concept of the festival is based around the idea of place, and as such the small town with it’s rich history creates fascinating context for the festival.

Each passing year enriches the traditions of the festival creating a unique atmosphere, and thanks to the accompanying events inspires a multitude of interpretations. This year’s edition is exceptionally promising in this regard.

The festival wants to speak the language of those who create it. Relate with the audience of Kieślowski’s films today. This is where you can talk about film outside the limitation of film form. An auditory installation is being prepared in the festival space, a throwback to the short-wave radio station once present in Sokolowsko – you will be able to hear the commentary and reactions of people exploring the not yet renovated but already open to the public part of the former sanatorium.
