„Illuminating the archives – film archives alive and their audiences”

June 28-29, 2021
ONLINE/SOKOŁOWSKO

As part of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s 80th birthday
under the honorary patronage of Maria Kieślowska

The conference organized by the Foundation for Contemporary Art In Situ, which looks after and develops the collection of The Krzysztof Kieślowski Archives, will provide a platform for the exchange of experiences for archivists, curators, researchers and other professionals who deal with collections of film-related document collections, including scripts, filmmakers’ biographical materials, production documentation, stills and other film-related objects. In terms of content, the conference is supported by the National Center for Film Culture in Łódź, the institution managing the Łódź City of Film UNESCO project.

The aim of the conference is to exchange experiences in the field of new methods of disseminating archival resources, research work with archives and cooperation of archives with creative sectors, including creators and creative industries. The conference will also serve to establish contacts between archivists, curators of archival projects and exhibition activities in the field of film, and various groups of film archives recipients and cinema lovers.
Thanks to the event, it will also be possible to analyze the challenges faced by social archives in Poland in terms of building relationships with recipients, public partners and business, and obtaining financing for running a business. There are over 600 social archives registered in Poland. However, only a few of them deal with the legacy of individual creators, artists and personalities. The conference will be an opportunity to establish relations between Polish biographical archives.

The conference will be an excellent opportunity to present the Krzysztof Kieślowski Archives and its collections in Sokołowsko. The event will also be enriched with an accompanying program, which will include screenings of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s films with lectures and introductions by outstanding film experts. As part of the event, materials recorded during all editions of the Hommage à Kieślowski festival will also be presented.
The event is part of the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the birth of Krzysztof Kieślowski. Throughout the summer in Sokołowsko, on weekends, starting on June 27, there will be screenings of over 50 short- and feature-length films by the Master and films referring to his work. At the same time, throughout the summer in Łódź, everyone will be able to visit the multimedia exhibition „Endless” prepared by the National Center for Film Culture and located at EC1 Łódź Miasto Kultury. A large part of the exhibition consists of objects and documents from the Krzysztof Kieślowski Archives in Sokołowsko.
Substantive partners: The National Center for Film Culture in Łódź, the managing institution of the Łódź City of Film UNESCO project and the Institute of Audiovisual Arts of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.
