“Daisies” / dir. Věra Chytilová / feature film / 1966 / 74 min. / Czechoslovakia
A Czechoslovak surrealist tragicomedy from 1966, directed and written by Věra Chytilová. The film, considered a milestone of the Czechoslovak New Wave, follows two young women (Jitka Cerhová and Ivana Karbanová) named Marie who play bizarre tricks on men. Originally conceived as a satire of bourgeois decadence, the film targets the rigid societal norms. *Daisies* also subverts stereotypical notions of women, exaggerating them to the benefit of the heroines. The film is recognized as a critique of authoritarianism, including communism and patriarchy, and was consequently banned from distribution in communist Czechoslovakia.
