The most interesting and valuable film productions of recent years, iconic works of the Master, presentations of films inspired by the works of Pier Paolo Pasolini and Nanni Moretti, as well as unique meetings with the filmmakers and with Kieslowski’s famous disciples. For dessert, on the 35th anniversary of THE SHORT FILM ABOUT LOVE, a meeting with Grazyna Szapołowska and Olaf Lubaszenko, who played the main characters in one of the most famous parts of THE DECALOGUE, will take place on the stage of the Health Cinematheater. This year the 12th edition of the festival will be held August 25-27.
– It is very important to me that the exchange of generational experiences is a two-way street in the case of our festival. To learn from each other constantly, regardless of age and “life course”. It seems to me that this is a thought extremely close to the life philosophy of Krzysztof Kieslowski. Kieslowski was (and still remains) certainly a master and mentor for many people, but at the same time I feel that he opened himself to people all the time and drew his strength from attentiveness, different sensitivities, different energies. That’s why I think Kieslowski would be delighted with a screening of Daniel Stopa’s KIOSK or Kuba Mikurda’s SOLARIS MON AMOUR. He would have been impressed by the different kinds of observation and use of the film medium. There is no room for a vacuum in Sokolowsk. We don’t want a vacuum. We want to demonstrate how dense and still alive this network of intellectual and emotional connections between Kieslowski’s work and contemporary Polish cinema can be. Kieslowski remains an overarching inspiration, but we are really targeting the discovery of the most interesting contemporary Polish and European films. Short and long, documentary and feature films… ,” says Diana Dabrowska, film scholar and artistic director of Hommage à Kieslowski.
At the opening of the festival, Krzysztof Kieslowski’s documentary film SIX WOMEN OF DIFFERENT AGE will be screened – dedicated not only to ballet, but also to the cycle of human life. On Saturday, an extraordinary reunion of Krzysztof Kieslowski’s disciples and a meeting of Viewers with them, including Waldemar Krzystek, Magdalena Lazarkiewicz, Zbigniew Stanek, Krzysztof Lang, Jacek Petrycki, Krzysztof Magowski and Dariusz Jablonski. Sunday is a nostalgic return to SHORT FILM ABOUT LOVE, which celebrates its 35th birthday this year. After the screening, the actors playing the main roles, Grazyna Szapolowska and Olaf Lubashenko, will meet with the audience.
For fans of Polish cinema, the organizers have prepared a section: Lazarkiewicz on Screen. It will include screenings of THE LAST RING (dir. Magdalena Łazarkiewicz / 1989) and I LOVE THE CINEMA (dir. Piotr Łazarkiewicz / 1987). A true tribute to the classics will be the mention of the X Film Group, which Kieslowski always cheered for, although he was never formally a member. Janusz Zaorski, Andrzej Wolf and Ajka Tarasov will talk about breaking down doors in late communist Poland.
Very important this year will be the Italian section. It will be Pasolini-documentary filmmaker, author of the magnificent LOVE GATHERINGS (1964). Pasolini-an insightful observer of reality. Pasolini-the writer, whose CORSARIAN EXPERIENCE ON POLITICS AND LIFE 1955-1975 has finally been published so comprehensively in Poland thanks to the Glowbook publishing house. This book will be discussed in Sokolowsk with Dr. Anna Osmólska-Mętrak and esteemed writer Przemyslaw Wielgosz. The Italian section also features Nanni Moretti; the Hommage a Kieslowski will feature a preview of the Italian director’s latest work, LEPS OF TOMORROW (2023). In his latest film, Moretti pays an important tribute to Kieslowski and the SHORT FILM ABOUT KILLING. Not everyone knows that Moretti was to play the male lead in THE TWO LIVES OF VERONICA, and he repeatedly says that meeting Kieslowski was one of the most important moments in his career.
The festival in Sokolowsk will also be an excellent opportunity to see some of the latest productions of the season.
All this and more awaits the participants of this year’s Hommage à Kieslowski, which will take place on the last weekend of August in Sokolowsk. More information about the festival and the entire program and screening schedule can be found at www.hommageakieslowski.pl
