The 4th edition of the Sokolowsko Hommage à Kieslowski Film Festival has ended.
On Sunday, September 7, 2014 , the 4th edition of the Sokolowsko Hommage à Kieslowski Film Festival came to an end. The festival is a cyclical event of exceptional importance – a three-day interdisciplinary project, during which close associates, friends and family of Krzysztof Kieslowski, enthusiasts of his work and young filmmakers from film and art schools will meet in one place. The idea of the festival is to reflect on the director’s work, and have a creative encounter with his films.
The axis of the festival was the film AMATOR and Kieslowski’s documentaries became the pretext for discussion: From the Point of View of a Night Porter, Talking Heads and The Bricklayer. The topics raised were the responsibility of the documentary filmmaker and the artistic freedom of the filmmaker, the reality found and the reality presented, as well as the role of art in human life
“Amateur” was presented at the festival, on the 35th anniversary of its premiere, in a reconstructed digital version. Before the screening, Stanislaw Zawiśliński, journalist, documentary filmmaker and biographer of Krzysztof Kieslowski, gave a lecture on film language, the importance of editing and screen truth – “Is the edited world credible”.
Once again Sokolowsko hosted Mrs. Maria Kieslowska, the wife of Krzysztof Kieslowski, as well as many of his friends and colleagues. Among them were the creators of “Amator” – Andrzej Jurga, Krzysztof Knittel, Jacek Petrycki, Krzysztof Wierzbicki, Rafał Waltenberger, Michał Żarnecki. We also hosted Jerzy Armata, Katarzyna Klimkiewicz, Natalia Koryncka-Gruz, Marcin Latałło, Magdalena Łazarkiewicz, Marcel Łoziński, Łukasz Ostalski, Dorota Paciarelli, Jakub Pączek, Katarzyna Warzecha, Greg Zgliński, as well as filmmakers from the Amateur Film Club “Klaps” – Veronika Dzida, Jan Dzida and Rafał Cymorek.
Jerzy Stuhr, a special guest of the festival, said during a meeting with the audience at the Health Cinema Theater about his role in “Amateur”: It was a great adventure. I got a role that broke my cabaret and vaudeville image, for which the entire Polish audience knew me. Especially since we shot “Amator” after the equally important for me “Top Dog.”“Amator” reversed this image. It showed me from a completely different side. I had to use other means to build the role and Christopher helped me a lot in this. The outstanding actor told many previously unknown anecdotes related to the making of the film “Amateur”. And in the evening, a special event of the festival took place on the stage of the Health Cinema Theater – the monodrama “Contrabasita” by Patrick Süskind, with which Jerzy Stuhr has been visiting stages around the world for many years.
Special guests of the festival were Serge Gordey and Christine Camdessus, producers of the documentary film “5 Shattered Cameras.” The film tells the story of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict from the point of view of a small village and the director’s family. The French producers talked about the challenges of this bravura production and also about the importance of film art in shaping public awareness.
The Sokolowsko Hommage à Kieslowski Film Festival also featured many side events. In the festival tent, the audience answered questions from the W.A.Y. project . (Who Are You?), which is expected to result in the creation of an archive of “Talking Heads” in Sokolowsko – answers from people around the world to Kieslowski’s three questions: Who are you? What is most important to you? What would you like?
During the three days of the 4th edition of Hommage à Kieslowski, the film screenings and accompanying events were attended by more than 2,000 participants. The festival aims to show that the work of one of Poland’s best-known directors, as well as his documentary sensibility, continue to be a point of reference for many contemporary filmmakers, both Polish and foreign. The festival is held under the honorary patronage of the director’s wife, Mrs. Maria Kieslowska.
