2012 Edition

“Let’s save Sokolowsko!” appealed Katarzyna Figura and Marzena Trybala during the 2nd edition of the “Hommage à Kieslowski” festival.

September 9, 2012 marked the end of the second edition of the festival dedicated to the person and work of Krzysztof Kieslowski – “Hommage à Kieslowski” in Sokolowsk. This beautiful town in Lower Silesia, located on the border with Germany and the Czech Republic, is the place where the director spent part of his childhood and made a documentary film entitled “Overexposure.” The event was attended by about 1,500 people. The audience, during 3 days, watched more than 50 film screenings in an unusual “magical” atmosphere, in the “Health” cinema theater and three outdoor cinemas.

During the festive Festival Gala, hosted by Renata Gabryjelska and Janusz Wróblewski, there was a ceremonial transfer of archival materials by the TOR Film Studio to the Archive of Krzysztof Kieslowski’s work, which is under construction in the historic Dr. Brehmer sanatorium being rebuilt for the purpose. Special guests Marcel Lozinski, Maria Kieslowska, Katarzyna Figura, Dorota Kędzierzawska, Marzena Trybała, Prof. Tadeusz Lubelski, Stanislaw Zawiśliński entered the book of the Archive of Krzysztof Kieslowski’s Creativity. The Festival Gala included the premiere screening of Krzysztof Kieslowski’s documentary titled “The Photograph,” which, after many years of absence, has returned to the film circuit, re-edited and soundtracked.

The festival program included Polish and foreign films that “dialogue with the work of the author of the Decalogue” – films by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Ken Loach, Helena Třeštíková, Jacek Bławut, Marcin Bortkiewicz, Małgorzata Szumowska, Marcel Łoziński, Dorota Kędzierzawska and Greg Zgliński were screened. “Hommage à Kieslowski” also included a number of accompanying events – between the films there were panel discussions and lectures with the creators of the presented films, special guests and critics. Film enthusiasts took part in the Film Criticism Workshop, conducted by prominent film scholars, critics and film journalists, including – Tadeusz Lubelski (Jagiellonian University), Janusz Wróblewski (POLITYKA), Łukasz Maciejewski, Bartosz Żurawiecki, Marcin Adamczak (Adam Mickiewicz University). Thanks to the festival’s partner, Carisma Film Group, there was a preview screening of the film “Manipulation” by Pascal Verdosci with Sebastian Koch and Klaus Maria Brandauer. The producer Philipp Rappold, who was present at the festival, met with the audience after the screening of the film.

Jeane Baptiste, a French architect who will use his experience to support the reconstruction of the historic Dr. Brehmer Sanatorium, where the In Situ Foundation for Contemporary Art, the festival’s organizer, is creating an International Culture Laboratory, came to Sokolowsk. Guests who came to the festival were enchanted by the atmosphere of the unusual place that is Sokolowsko and by the huge potential associated with both the festival and the reconstruction of the historic sanatorium. Actresses Katarzyna Figura and Marzena Trybała recorded a spontaneous appeal “Let’s save Sokolowsko!”, addressed to everyone who cares about the fate of Poland’s culture.
