2011 Edition

The year 2011 marked the 15th anniversary of the death of Krzysztof Kieslowski, the visionary of cinema and “director of souls.” On September 23-25, the interdisciplinary festival “Hommage a Kieslowski” took place in Sokolowsk in Lower Silesia. For 3 days, friends and colleagues of the director met with art school students and the public during screenings, panel discussions and workshops. Among the invited guests were: Krystyna Janda, Hanna Krall, Agnieszka Holland, Artur Barciś, Slawomir Idziak,Marcel Łozinski, Krzysztof Piesiewicz, Krzysztof Preisner, Jerzy Stuhr, Zbigniew Zamachowski, Stanisław Zawiśliński, and many others.

The festival was held under the honorary patronage of the director’s wife, Mrs. Maria Kieślowska.

The event “Hommage à Kieslowski” was realized in Sokolowsk – a place of particular importance in the filmmaker’s biography – where Krzysztof Kieslowski spent several years of his childhood and where his filmmaking passions were born. It was in the CinemaTheater “Health” in Sokolowsk that the artist watched his first film screenings through a hole in the roof, and it was here that the filmed Transparency was created – memories recalled by the director in his autobiography.

The aim of the project was to reflect, reinterpret and reincarnate the creative ideas guiding Krzysztof Kieslowski in his film work. “Hommage à Kieslowski” is a way of bringing the director’s work closer, a creative encounter with his work, activating his oeuvre in the context of contemporary filmmaking – an opportunity to redraw the line of continuity between successive generations of filmmakers.

The project exceeds the framework of a traditionally understood film festival, being an event that combines the formula of a film review, creative workshops, panel discussion and artistic presentation in the form of etudes, performance, exhibitions and concert. The event provided an excellent opportunity for confrontation and cooperation between representatives of different fields of art, backgrounds and generations, mutual exchange of techniques, tools and experiences – the engine of development of artistic creativity.

The originator and organizer of the “Hommage a Kieslowski” festival is the IN SITU Foundation for Contemporary Art, which also creates the Culture Laboratory in Sokolowsk and the Archive of Krzysztof Kieslowski’s work.
